Shida Kartli – a zone of conflict

2009

Abandoned at the border

This time, Go Group organized a journalistic outing to the village of Dvani.  After the war in August 2008, this village became one of the last settlements that remained under the jurisdiction of the Georgian authorities along the zone of conflict.

In Dvani, representatives of Georgian and foreign media met with the local population. The meeting was attended by over 20 people.

Today, several hundred people live in Dvani.  Most during the war were forced to leave their homes. But soon, despite the danger, they returned.

From the house where the meeting took place, both Georgian and Ossetian checkpoints were clearly visible, about a hundred meters from each other.  During the day, the village of Dvani is under the protection of special police forces, but at night the special forces leave, and the local population can only rely on themselves.
